The Chicago Children's Clinic specializes in the assessment and treatment of
Autism Spectrum Disorders, ADHD, Learning Disabilities, and
Social-Emotional disorders using state-of-the-art, evidence-based
practices. Our strategies and techniques are grounded in the research
and clinical literature, yet flexible enough to adapt to the unique
needs and characteristics of each child and family.

Our staff includes 2 licensed clinical psychologists, 1 speech-language
pathologist (her bio is not yet on the website), 1 educational
specialist, and 2 Master's level therapists, and we are expanding.

For families concerned about their child's development, we provide
initial diagnostic assessments. For a suspected case of autism, we often
use the ADOS and ADI-R, and also use a battery of other tests and
techniques to assess not only the child's diagnosis, but, most
importantly, the child's strengths. Our autism services continue to
expand.

To my knowledge, we are the only practice in Illinois with clinicians
certified to provide Pivotal Response Treatment (PRT). For more
information about PRT, please link to http://education.ucsb.edu/autism.
PRT is one of the most widely researched, evidence-based practices for
the treatment of autism. By focusing on family support and on the
education of children with autism in community environments and
classrooms with their typically developing peers, PRT teaches parents to
be the best therapist for their child. Because the techniques are based
on using naturally-occurring learning opportunities to increase the
child with autism's motivation to interact and communicate,
generalization of skills occurs quickly. Because parents are vital and
primary members of the child's therapy team, parent stress has been
shown to decrease as a result of PRT, as parents experience their role
in bringing about their child's recovery. PRT differs from other
versions of ABA that focus on discrete trial training. PRT focuses on
using naturally-occuring objects and activities that the child finds
enjoyable to teach motivation, language skills, and improve behavior. To

PRT differs from other play-based treatments because it is grounded in
well-designed clinical research that has been conducted over the past 20
years showing PRT to be effective. It is recognized by the National
Academy of Sciences, Educating Children with Autism, as one of the few
empirically-supported treatments for children with autism.

Not only are we trained in the provision of PRT,we also sponsor training
workshops for school district personnel, clinicians from other
practices, and parents of children with autism so that state-of-the-art
treatments can be disseminated quickly to the community.

I, personally, oversee the treatment of every child with autism in our
practice. I often advocate for children during IEP meetings, testify at
due process proceedings, and observe children within their school or
home environments to provide consultation and assistance. When children
are receiving care from other treatment providers, I am often consulted
to provide an independent assessment of the child's progress in
treatment, and to provide recommendations for where treatment should
focus in the future. Often children with autism are receiving care from
a large team of school-based, and private treatment providers. Parents
often ask me to "play quarterback" and help manage their child's
treatment to ensure that everyone is working together in a manner that
complements one another's strengths.

Finally, many children with autism have siblings who may also be
struggling with some other neurobehavioral disorder, such as a learning
disability, ADHD, speech or language issue, or may have trouble coping
with the stress of having a sibling with a disability. We offer
comprehensive diagnostic assessments, using a battery of
neuropsychological tests and other techniques, and individual and family
therapy for children and adolescents.

Our mission is to improve the lives of children and adolescents by providing the highest quality of
clinical care, the greatest amount of compassion, and by striving to be
the most supportive, helpful, and comprehensive center of its kind.
